This is my new favorite Marvel graphic novel from the 80'south. The story offers a hit label for one of the coolest Marvel Villain and creates an awesome team-upwards while doing that. I enjoyed Roger Stern's writing immensely. It was the perfect "Sympathy for the Devil" story arc. Equally for the art, Mike Mignola did a great job in certain panels. The rest were average.

At present, this edition contains some extras. One of them is a spectacular segment from 1971 featuring Doom's failed attempt to save his mother. The balance of the segments are just fillers to pad this edition.

There is something crawly most a good magic based comic. Roger Stern, someone I am not familiar with, does a wonderful chore with this truly masterful tale of power and magic. Mike Mignola is the creative person and while his art way isn't as polished as what it after becomes, it is still quite adept.

In many ways this is an origin story. We will encounter how Doom and Foreign both came to exist the men they became. An incredible old and extremely powerful Magician known every bit the Aged Genghis sends out a mystical signal. Only mages of the highest caliber fifty-fifty hear the phone call. The are instructed to gather at a lost temple to attend the telephone call of the Aged Genghis. The concluding two to arrive are Dr. Strange and Dr. Doom.
The Examination is designed past the godlike Vishanti to determine the next Sorcerer Supreme. Dr. Strange ends up winning the contest and earns the title. But, all is not done! The "runner-upwardly" and the only one, other than Dr. Strange, left standing is Dr. Doom. According to the laws of the exam, Dr. Strange must grant Dr. Doom a benefaction.
It is at this point, an already wonderful tale of magic and magician'southward takes the next step and moves into the truly cosmic levels of power and the story becomes truly epic. Dr. Doom wants Dr. Strange'south assist in going to Hades and rescuing his mother-whose soul is in the hands of Mephisto. What follows is an epic battle betwixt Doom and Strange against the forces of Mephisto then, the Lord of Hades himself.

The writing was very well done and the story is well crafted. This is a nifty portrayal of Doom, Strange and Mephisto. All iii characters are washed phenomenally. Doom does come off as big-headed but brilliant. Mephisto is besides very well done. I similar the version of Mephisto where he looks like the Devil, and not Romita'due south version. Mignola's art isn't equally polished equally what he later churned out for Hellboy. Merely, that being said, it works well for this tale. Some of the splash pages are very well done. Mignola's Strange, Doom and Mephisto are all well illustrated. Stern'due south interpretation of Doom's origin is excellent, as is his portrayal of Doom as the benevolent ruler of Latveria.

All in all this is how swell tales of magic, betrayal, power and the Devil Himself ought to exist written. A tight, exciting tale with some adept twists brand this is wonderful one shot. If y'all are a Dr. Doom, Dr. Strange or Mephisto fan this is a must read. Fifty-fifty if you don't count any of those three among your height characters, this is still a expert read because of the great story Stern writes. A nifty version of the Strange/Doom interactions.

The story is of how Doom learned some mystic arts and how those were nevertheless in no style enough to save his dearest mother'due south soul. So he needs the help of Dr. Strange which he gets subsequently an interesting contest. Non exactly a team-upwardly ane would expect (and yes, Foreign was not really happy in the beginning).

(Yes I went with the movie version of Strange, sue me.)

Though this story tin in no way compete with Sean's wonderful rendition, it is quite proficient.
A deep exploration of two very interesting characters that, thankfully, doesn't merely show a bad guy vs. a good guy, but gives both of them real depth.
Most notably it is about Doom, who combines mystic powers with science (I actually like that) and has learned a lot through time, changing with his responsibilities, having non simply a remarkable intellect merely too a remarkable heart despite existence a and so-called baddie. His background story and the story of his people and mother were very interesting indeed.

The fine art isn't 100% to my liking, only it was really good too, which shouldn't come up equally a surprise since information technology's Mike Mignola's (though some early work) and I take nonetheless and then see something of his that I don't like.

The growth of Doctor Doom as multi-faceted grapheme can be attributed to the many writers that have handled the scripts of the Fantastic Iv comic books through the years. A hint here, a panel there, until there was enough interest to merit a single issues. Through the decades, these backstories accumulated until writer Roger Stern took these snippets of Doom'due south past and melded them as an integral plot point in this graphic novel. The gypsy roots, his parents' tragic ends, his science, his magic and the lone annual ritual he undergoes to relieve his mother's soul. Stern never loses rail of his Doom and finer hijacks the top billing abroad from Doctor Strange.

Author Stern is aided superbly in this story by the talents of Mike Mignola, who does the pencils and the layouts, and Mark Annoy, who inks and paints. It is plumbing equipment that in this edition of the graphic novel, early Doom and Foreign stories are included, as well as early rarely seen Mignola Marvel work.

Mignolia's art is nonetheless a little raw and doesn't contain quite as much of the hard angles and heavy inks of his Hellboy work.

This TPB has a reprint of an early Doom story establishing his ritual in trying to rescue his mother. There are also a couple Namor stories by Mignolia as well as a number of pinups of both Doom and Dr. Foreign.

In a year where a alive action Dr. Foreign movie is going to be released, this is a strong, solid story to assistance build an understanding of the grapheme.

Triump and Torment is a slap-up story. I really enjoyed the art style - it fabricated the story experience truly epic. I like how the backstories of both Doctors was seamlessly integrated into the principal story. This story alene is 5 star worthy.

Roger Stern is one of those comic writers that I often forget about, since while I never consider his piece of work up to the standard that Roy Thomas and Dennis O'Neil set at Marvel and DC comics equally part of the "second wave" of comic creators (after of course, Lee and Kirby), Stern delivered solid piece of work for his employers (and he was "third wave" anyway.) This is not to hateful that Stern is an unknown commodity--it's just that when someone reminds you lot of some element of your favorite hero's back story, information technology turns out that Stern was the 1 behind it.

The bulk of Dr. Strange & Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment concerns itself with the story of Dr. Strange and Dr. Doom confronting the Marvel Comics demon Mephisto in order to try and relieve Doom'south mother's soul from damnation. The story of Doom's mother and Mephisto's interactions had been dealt with previously when the author Gerry Conway (another writer, who like Stern produced solid work throughout his career) had established that Doom would face some demonic adversary (it was not revealed every bit Mephisto at this betoken) annually in an attempt to save his mother'southward soul, only to fight that being to a standstill. The events of Triumph and Torment tip the balance in Doom's favor, every bit he now has Strange on his side. However, things are sticky when dealing with demons like Mephisto, and it's not as piece of cake equally all of that. Stern is able to brand this narrative duck and weave in a style that is satisfying to readers, peculiarly when it seems like Stern'southward read on Medico Doom is equally wrong as writing a novel from Luke Skywalker's perspective.

Of course, fifty-fifty though I am sure many readers didn't read Triumph & Torment when information technology was originally published (my local convenience store didn't carry the burgeoning format of "graphic novels") Stern's story has become function of the canonical fabric of Dr. Doom's origin, and I recall elements of this actualization in Ed Brubaker's take on the Doom origin Books of Doom . I'g a big proponent of creative teams making the characters theirs when they have over a book, only the actually great writers know a good thing when they run into it, and there's no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
